Grafton married Mary Caroline Berkeley (18 June 1795 – 10 September 1873, the daughter of Admiral the Hon. Sir George Cranfield Berkeley), on 20 June 1812 in Portugal.

In 1750, still living in poverty, and already at work on his dictionary, Samuel Johnson began anonymously to write the essays which appeared in The Rambler, a twopenny sheet which appeared twice weekly for two years, whether Johnson was well or ill, idle or busy.
